Willis-Esqueda honored at Death Penalty Focus awards dinner

Congratulations to UNL Psychology associate professor Cynthia Willis Esqueda and former UNL Psychology Ph.D. student Russ Espinosa for being honored by Death Penalty Focus at an Abolition Awards dinner in Beverly Hills on May 7.   Death Penalty Focus is an organization “committed to the abolition of the death penalty through public education, grassroots organizing and political advocacy, media outreach, and domestic and international coalition building”.

 Cynthia and Russ were recognized for their recent research into the social bias in the criminal justice system, particularly regarding the sentencing of Hispanic Americans.”   Their work includes a 2015 paper in Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology titled “The influence of mitigation evidence, ethnicity, and SES on death penalty decisions by European American and Latino venire persons.”
