Breanne Sande-Martin (she/her/hers)


Breanne Sande-Martin graduated from Augsburg University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in Clinical Psychology. As an undergraduate, she worked on multiple smartphone addiction studies in Dr. Ben Denkinger’s Eye Tracking lab that examined the impact of receiving smartphone notifications and its effect on cognitive functioning. Breanne is also a McNair scholar. Additionally, she held a job as a Chemical Dependency Technician at a residential inpatient recovery center and interned as a Violence Prevention educator and Domestic Violence Legal Advocate. Through these experiences, Breanne became interested in the relationship between substance use and trauma in minority populations.  

At UNL Breanne does research on co-occurring disorders, specifically substance use disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Breanne is currently a Mental Health extern for Nebraska probation, providing individual therapy and mental health assessments for those on probation. Lastly, she is working on various projects, some of which include: 

  • A three-paper dissertation focused on substance use and trauma in marginalized populations.  

  • A systematic review on childhood maltreatment and alcohol use in African American adolescents.  

  • A meta-analysis on opioid use and trauma in African Americans and European Americans: Is there a racial difference?   

  • Emotional Clarity Difficulties Mediate the Relationship between PTSD Symptom Severity and Substance Use Treatment Persistence
