Joseph S. Swoboda, PhD



Joseph S. Swoboda received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1987. He became fully licensed as a Clinical Psychologist in 1989 and currently holds a status of Licensed Psychologist in the State of Nebraska. From 1985 – 2014 he served as a staff psychologist at the Community Mental Health Center of Lancaster County (CMHCLC) until that agency was defunded by Lancaster County. This facility served adults with severe mental illness, often co-morbid with substance abuse. As a staff psychologist, he conducted forensic and psychological evaluations, provided individual, marital, group, and family psychotherapy, trained advanced doctoral level clinical psychology externs, conducted research and program evaluations, and functioned as clinical supervisor for the Community Living Services Unit of the CMHCLC. He is an active member of the American Psychological Association and currently serves as President of the Nebraska Psychological Association (NPA).  He served as Chair and/or Co-Chair of the NPA Ethics Committee from the late 1990s through 2010. He is also a member of the American Association for Rural Mental Health, the World Mental Health Association and the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences and serves on the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Chapter. He also serves as Scholarship Chair for the Czech Language Foundation.

Dr. Swoboda developed a private practice in 1991 and continues to see adolescents and adults for individual, marital, and family therapy. His practice interests involve psychological assessment and therapy with a focus on attention deficit problems, co-morbid disorders associated with autism spectrum disorders and continued work with the SMI population in addition to adult depression, anxiety and personality disorders.  He continues to attend the SMI Laboratory meetings at UNL as a matter of personal and professional interest, and to foster links to NPA and other professional organizations.
