Robert Johnson, PhD

Robert received his Bachelor of Science degree from Black Hills State University in 1996 and his Master of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 2006.  Prior to coming to UNL he worked as a clinician and clinical researcher. Robert was a National Institute of Health Predoctoral Research Fellow and a Clinical Psychology Intern at the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta, Maine.

Robert’s interests in serious mental illness focus broadly on mental health service systems and social policy. More specifically his interests include the concept and process of recovery, integrated biopsychosocial rehabilitation, community mental health, assertive community treatment, Evidenced-Based Practice in Psychology (EBPP), http://www.apa.org/practice/ebp.html, and the use of program evaluation technology to improve treatment and clinical outcomes.

Robert was awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) to support his research.  Robert’s clinical research focuses on the continued development of his instrument, the Comprehensive Inventory of Mental Health and Recovery and Rehabilitation Services (CIMHRRS), which assesses programs that provide integrated services to people with a serious mental illness.  Project collaborators include the Yale Program for Recovery and Community Mental Health and the New Hampshire - Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center, and Dartmouth Evidence-Based Practices Center.  The CIMHRRS (pronounced “simmers”), is envisioned as a theory driven instrument in which to assess the fidelity of programs to particular service models, and to quantitatively and qualitatively characterize programmatic differences in service settings and outcomes. This is expected to serve the purposes of both services research (e.g. research on characteristics of effective service programs) and program evaluation (assessing the performance of specific programs in the real world).

Robert completed a post-doc at the Durham, NC VA and is now directing development of psychiatric rehabilitation in the Tennessee VA system.
