Asad Korea began as a Biological Sciences major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. However, during his sophomore year, he let curiosity move him to make a big change to explore aspects of the mind even further.

“I found myself increasingly intrigued by how the mind works and how both biology and environment shape behavior. That curiosity led me to Psychology, and I’ve continued to be fascinated by it ever since,” says Asad.

Now a senior, Asad is interning with Step Ahead ABA as a Registered Behavior Technician. He found the position appealing due to its use of Applied Behavior Analysis in treating neurodevelopmental disorders in children.

“I wanted hands-on experience working directly with individuals who benefit from applied psychological techniques. The focus of my work involves one-on-one behavioral therapy,” says Asad.

He is implementing direct therapy under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and gaining experience in collecting data on therapeutic targets and behaviors of concern while establishing a connection with clients.

“This internship is helping me strengthen my communication, patience, and problem-solving skills,” says Asad. “I’m also learning more about data collection and how to adapt strategies to meet individual needs, skills that are essential for entering the mental health field.”

Asad also sees how the experience has influenced his overall view of therapy. “One impactful moment was realizing how powerful small, consistent interventions can be in creating lasting behavioral change. Watching those changes unfold over time really deepened my appreciation for the therapeutic process.”

While this experiential learning has offered Asad an exciting opportunity to help his clients step ahead, it has also provided insight into his next steps.

“After graduation, I plan to pursue a graduate program in clinical psychology. Since my career goals will involve the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, this internship is giving me a clearer picture of how evidence-based methods can be applied in real-world settings,” says Asad. “It has also confirmed my desire to continue in a profession where I can support people in achieving meaningful change in their lives.”
