Lisa Crockett's research interests focus on adolescent development. She conducts research in two primary areas: adolescent risk behavior, with an emphasis on sexuality; and ethnic differences in parenting and adolescent adjustment. In one study, she followed a sample of rural adolescents from early adolescence into early adulthood. Using this data set she has examined psychological and social predictors of early sexuality activity and heavy drinking among rural youth, as well as adolescent predictors of young adult outcomes. In subsequent work she examined the childhood origins of adolescents' sexual risk-taking, focusing on self-regulation as a key predictor. She has probed the relationships between early temperament and internalizing and externalizing problems, exploring the role of puberty, on one hand, and key social contexts (family, school, peers) on the other. Her work on ethnicity has examined the relations between parenting practices and adolescent adjustment across different ethnic groups, using national survey data and qualitative data from focus group interviews with teenagers. Her most recent project in this line of research examines the development and well-being of Latino adolescents, with particular attention to ecological, familial, and social-cognitive predictors of positive and negative adjustment. Dr. Crockett served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Research on Adolescence from 1999-2004 and has served on the editorial boards of Developmental Psychology, the Journal of Early Adolescence, Child Development, and CDEMP. She is a former president of the Society for Research on Adolescence.
