Emma Oquendo, an undergraduate majoring in psychology with a political science minor, was named a Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI) Scholar.
RBSI is a competitive program that offers scholarships for students interested in graduate training with a focus on traditionally underrepresented scholars and topics. Scholars participate in a 5-week summer session at Duke University, where they gain research experience and participate in networking and professional development activities.
Oquendo worked with faculty member Sergio Wals on her application.
"I was fortunate enough to have Emma in my Immigration and Politics class last fall," Wals said. "She is one of the brightest students I have ever had the pleasure to work with in 15 years here at UNL. I am extremely proud of Emma and can't wait to see how the RSBI experience takes her research potential to new heights."
The program is supported by American Political Science Association (APSA).
